2012 Wedding Trends

With the first few days of the fresh New Year, always comes the hundreds of emails and questions of “what’s hot” this year in the wedding industry. This is always a hard question to answer because it varies so much by region, budget and frankly, opinion; but there are always a few things that I see every year that stand out. So here are my top 6 wedding trends for 2012:

Understated versus the Big Blowout – This started out of necessity when the economy took a dive but it is really taking hold and I don’t see it going away any time soon. Brides are seeing that they can have a beautiful wedding without spending all the crazy amounts of money that has been spent in the past. Choosing to follow the “less is more” philosophy when planning their weddings is not only saving couples money but making the day more personal and intimate. You can see this in the extra stuff like favors which are often the first thing to go. But Brides and Grooms are taking more time customizing their centerpieces and place settings with simple yet very effective things like their monogram, pictures from childhood or even love letters.

Eco-friendly – This is also a big one that seems like it is going to stay around for a while. Yes, there are Brides that are really passionate about having a “green wedding” and go all out in order to be green as possible. Beware however, going green does not mean going less expensive. If you intend on having a completely eco-friendly wedding be prepared to shell out a lot more money. But if you are a Bride who is conscious of the environment and would like to do as much as you can without going broke or serving wheat grass in a skinny glass, there are plenty things you can do like using local vendors, growing some of your own food and re-purposing older items into your décore.

Vintage – I really like this trend. I have had Brides go really vintage and unique with their weddings, but just like going green you can add little bits and pieces to your day that will save you money and have guests saying “wow!” The big thing about this trend is going to things you already have. Antiques (everything from old books, unique glass jars, unusual fabrics and historical items) are a great way to add personality to the event. Consider it recycling and go through your attic as well as your Grandma’s. You have no idea what treasures you will find there. Thrift stores are also a fabulous place to find gems that you may have never thought to use. All it takes is your imagination and old stuff to create a show stopping wedding-on the cheap!

Church Alternatives – I really see a lot of couples opting out of the traditional church ceremony and looking for something different. It can be as simple as having the ceremony in the reception hall to getting married outside in a beautiful grotto. Obviously, the destination wedding is still popular but can be expensive. I see this as another way for the couple to mix things up a bit. I am not crazy at all about having the ceremony at Walmart or Taco Bell, but I have seen the reservoir, a mansion or large estate, park, barn and orchard all done well. There are lots of creative choices out there.

Non-traditional Receptions – I think this trend also started out in order to save money but because of the creativity, it is staying around. Receptions are not always the big theatrical productions of the past. Brides are now opting for shorter, less extravagant parties like pastry receptions. When they do this they lessen the cost of the food because they are not having a full meal. Then they don’t need as many tables, linens, centerpieces and so on. Another popular choice is a nightclub reception. The couple will choose to get married later in the evening and party the night away in a nightclub setting. Again, tradition is just not as important as bringing in your personality and fitting in your budget.

Making it Your Own – Finally, it all comes down to this – Brides and Grooms are really letting go of old expectations and rules and making their event their own. This is a great thing because the meaning behind their love story is starting to be told in a better way and guests are enjoying the unique experiences that they are having at each and every wedding they attend. Remember that this wedding is all about the two of you starting your marriage and as long as it isn’t tacky, illegal or dangerous I say make your own trend and love every minute of it!

What a GORGEOUS day for a wedding!

Saturday was a stunningly beautiful day with a blue sky, slight breeze and a comfortable 78 degrees. Perfect for Elizabeth & Evan to tie the knot outside. When I met Liz I told her that I had a direct line to God when it came to outside weddings and she laughed. Whatever it was, it was certainly a picture perfect day.

Liz and Evan were a joy to work with. Both are very much in love with the other and it showed in everything they did. The wedding they planned was classy with a bit of fun thrown in as shown by their unique entrance at the reception. But more on that later.

The Ceremony was held at O Aces in Peru. I had never been there before but you can be sure that I will be back. The location was beautiful and rustic with a charming pond and waterfall complete with a wooden bridge for the Groomsmen to walk over as they entered the tent. The incomparable Pastor Cole was the officiant and did a beautiful job as usual. The Bridal Party was a lot of fun to work with and they were all very helpful. They looked good too!

Liz was stunning as she walked the path to her Father. The scenery was just so pretty for the whole ceremony.
The photographer was Sara Hart and she did a fantastic job. Her pictures are well done - she really captured the feeling of the day and I hope I get the chance to work with her again.

The reception was held at Casa Bella and as always, was a beautiful night. The couple chose black & white with a pale blue as an accent color. These really made the room look elegant and not overly-done. The beautiful centerpieces were done by Evan's Aunt Sabrina and were gorgeous. I think too many Brides think the more they do the better and more expensive the wedding looks. Nothing could be farther from the truth, but Liz and Evan both really understood this.

A lot of this wedding was a family affair. In addition to his aunt doing the flowers; Evan's cousin Joe Ulery was the D.J. for the evening and was A LOT of fun to work with. He kept the party hoping until the last dance, just like the couple wanted. The entrance of the Bridal Party was extremely unique and fun. They all entered to "Ladies & Gentlemen" by Saliva. It talks about "Welcome to the main event" and was very well done. They all looked like they had fun doing it - the most important part. Evan's Uncle Steve also did the videography. It is always nice to see a family pull together to make a wedding happen for the Bride & Groom.

The cake was made by Create-A-Cake and was as DELICIOUS as it was beautiful. One of these days I will figure out how to get through a wedding without having to eat the cake; but until then I WILL ENJOY IT!

The day was as perfect as a wedding can get; The Bride and Groom looked fabulous and were glowing; the guests enjoyed themselves from beginning to end; and I had the honor of being at the beginning of yet another wonderful marriage.

Elizabeth and Even: I wish you nothing but bliss together. May you hold each other through thick and thin and experience all that life has waiting for you.

Congratulations Josephine & Martin Montenegro!

Friday I had the incredible pleasure of seeing two wonderful people tie the knot.

Martin and Josephine are recent Purdue University graduates and are both engineers. I can see the eyes rolling right now but they aren't your typical engineers - really!

Martin is from Argentina and Josephine is from Malaysia making for a really different wedding. That is my specialty! I enjoyed getting to know both of them, although they are probably tired of hearing from me - but now they are Crista-free!

They both wanted a non-traditional wedding. The ceremony and reception were held in the South Ballroom of the Purdue University Union. Ashley and her staff there were great to work with, very flexible and incredibly patient. The ballroom was split in two so both parts of the wedding were separate. Josephine choice pink and purple as her colors and they looked beautiful in the ballroom.

Roseann Aschliman performed the ceremony and did a beautiful job as usual. She also thinks quick on her feet which is very much appreciated. Anyone looking for an officiant - she does a fabulous job!

The flowers were beautifully done by White Iris Designs. They suggested using 2 different heights which worked well because the ballroom is so high. The pieces were accented with peacock feathers which were carried throughout the entire theme on the seating chart, table names and even her bouquet. They were all beautiful Thank you Tammy & Val!

To capture the beautiful day was Anthony Mosley and I CANNOT wait to see his pictures! He seemed to capture every aspect of the day and had incredible attention to detail. I really enjoyed working with him and hope to do more work with him the future.

Xoomworx Videography was there from beginning to end recording all of the moments so they remain unforgettable. Dan Lindley and his beautiful wife were very kind and easy to work with. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Keeping the party hopping was Stephen with Sound Specialist DJs. He was wonderful to work with. He also included up-lighting and a personalized monogram for the wall. Not all DJs offer those services - not only were they great additions to the party, he was also very affordable. He kept the evening going and did a great job.

I was fortunate to meet Josephine's Aunt Sally and her Mother Jennie a few weeks before the ceremony. It was so interesting getting to know them and talking about Malaysian customs. They were also very patient with a big car mishap we had on one of our trips to Indianapolis. Sally made me feel better by telling me, "It's OK Crista, we have car troubles in Malaysia too!" Thank you Aunt Sally!!

I also got to meet Martin's family from Argentina - what a great group of people. His younger brother Thomas looks just like him but is about a foot taller. Why is it we oldest children always seem to get the shaft?

The favors are straight from Malaysia. It is a keychain in 2 pieces: a Bride and a Groom each holding a symbol on a heart. The heart is magnetized and pulls the heart together. When the symbols are next to each other they spell "HAPPINESS" - perfect for a wedding don't you think?

My favorite part of the whole day was the tea ceremony. It is a Chinese custom for the newlyweds to serve first the Bride's parents & then the Groom's parents tea. It is a sign of respect and shows gratitude for the childhood they had. Really cool. The parents then in turn give the couple a token (gift). It was moving as I watched Josephine kneel in front of her mother in her beautiful red dress with her husband at her side.

Like I said...very cool!

As it is with all my couples, I will miss talking with them so often, joking with Martin and just plain staring at Josephine because she is so beautiful. I wish this couple nothing but Bliss and happiness in their marriage and of course - lots and lots of babies!!

Wedding Dresses Galore!

Wednesday I had the pleasure of showcasing 3 beautiful Bridal Gowns provided by Andrea Reed and Sophia's Bridal and Tux on my monthly "Blissfully Simple Wedding Planning" segment on Fox 59.

A wedding gown is the crown jewel of the wedding day for a Bride. This is the dress that she has dreamed of since she was 2 years old and has envisioned herself walking down the aisle to her Prince Charming. It is CRITICAL to Brides that this be just "perfect."

Sophia's Bridal was a perfect choice to show popular Bridal options. All three of the dresses she showed were UNDER $1500! You can say, "YES TO THE DRESS" and still be able to pay for the rest of the wedding! Not to mention, all of these dresses are exclusive to Sophia's. You cannot get them anywhere else in the state. Yes, she is that good! :)

Andrea says that belts, feathers, empire waists and sweetheart necklines are all the rage this season. Adding a colorful twist to the dress is popular too, including black and red.

Wedding Dessert Trends

The traditional wedding cake is getting used to some company at the proverbial cake table. Brides are getting more and more creative with the dessert course at their weddings with everything from whoopie pies to chocolate chip cookies with shots of milk.

There is no rule that says you HAVE to have a wedding cake; in fact, couples are finding that their guests are really "savoring" the different options. Pies are really popular and are starting to take over cup cakes. Anything chocolate is always a safe bet and yes, even donuts are making an appearance!

Below is my appearance today on Fox news showing a wonderful variety of options. I really want to thank Rozzi's Catering & Chef Jo Ann for the FABULOUS desserts today. The Fox news crew was all over them after the segment. I have to admit, desserts on Ash Wednesday was not one of my brighter ideas! I hope the segment gives you some great ideas. Happy eating!

2011 Wedding Trends - Royal Wedding Inspired?

Everybody LOVES to see what the Royals are doing and now that Prince William and Kate Middleton are getting married April 29th - it is everything WEDDINGS!

This couple is very modern and contemporary. They are doing a great job of keeping everything "hush hush" which makes it difficult for those that are obsessed with knowing what their wedding will be like.

I was on Fox 59 this morning talking about the Royal trends that we see happening in our normal - every day lives. You will see:

~ Lots more bling
~ Eco-friendly options
~ Do-it- yourself is still a huge trend
~ And vintage has come in as a very popular look

2011 Disturbing Wedding Trends

Are You Kidding?

I’ve been a wedding planner for a long time and I have seen products come and go; all promising to help the Bride with some aspect of her wedding. But over this past year, I can’t help but thinking that people have lost their minds!

A wedding is the first “coming-out” party that the couple celebrates together. The first on a long journey that will create memories that will sustain generations to follow. So how has this special day grown into an industry that has created products such as Bridal Diapers! No, I am not kidding.
When I married my love almost 15 years ago, I remember how cumbersome that big dress was and ultimately, I didn’t go to the restroom until the day was over. I can see how someone would think that this was a problem that needed solving but a diaper – come on! I hate to think that the diaper was created for women that were so terrified by the prospect of getting married that they might have an accident on the way up to the altar. I can hear the commercial now, “Feel confident on your special day! Guaranteed not to ride up!”

But that’s not all. Are we seriously so vain that we need to have a show where Brides compete for plastic surgery? This disgusting trend shows signs of only getting worse as it has become more common for Brides to require their Bridesmaids to get a “nip and a tuck” before the big day. Thank God I am out of the age where I am asked to be a Bridesmaid – I would go broke!

If money is an issue, you can now take your vows at Taco Bell or any other fast food restaurant. Dubbed a “Drive-thru Wedding,” it is quick, easy on your pocket book and your guests can pay for their own meal. What’s not to like?

This is only out-done by crazy themed weddings. Believe it or not, the fastest growing themed wedding is a “Zombie” wedding. Yep – that’s just what I want to celebrate my new union, the walking dead. Complete with a cake in the shape of a disemboweled victim bleeding all over the white linens.

Come on people – wake up! Have we really lost sight of what a wedding means? If you want a party, then have a party but don’t sully the significance of the beginning of a marriage. It seems as though we are losing the importance and significance of total commitment and monogamy.

A marriage is a gift and deserves more thought than a fast food joint and more meaning than a reason for Botox. A wedding should be done with grace and poise and I don’t mean the diaper!

Tonight I had the pleasure of speaking to the wonderful ladies of Alpha Xi Delta at Purdue University about Blissfully Simple Wedding Planning. They invited me to join me for dinner and I happily accepted. Mamma G. Prepared a fabulous pot roast dinner which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I loved talking with them about what I do. They had great questions and were great hosts. They have a great philanthropy, "Autism Speaks" and you can tell they are a wonderful group of young women.

I am filled with great hope and pride as I look at these ladies who will be our future leaders. We are in good hands!

Thank you Emily for all of your coordination and help. I truly enjoyed myself!

Here is to the wedding of the century - so it is being called. What an incredible night. In fact, it was so big and so over-the-top it took me a full week to recover!

Taneasha is a woman that knows what she wants. She wanted a wedding that people would talk about for years to come and she got what she wished for! But she put in a lot of hard work and money to achieve her dream wedding and I was proud to be a part of it.

Being a fall wedding, Taneasha chose GORGEOUS fall colors: chocolate brown, vibrant oranges, golds and creamy ivory to start the vision. She had Bowden Flowers do her bouquets and decorations and they were beautiful. The flowers can really make or break the look of a wedding and Tammy did a fantastic job of realizing Taneasha's vision of a fall paradise.

The ceremony was held at Mt. Pisgah in Kokomo, IN and was packed! I believe there was AT LEAST 500 people there. In the Bridal Party there were 10 attendants on either side, 5 hostesses, 1 usher, 1 ring bearer, 1 flower girl and 1 banner girl. We are talking HUGE.

The ceremony was presided by Pastor Anderson and was wonderful. Particularly when Taneasha walked down the aisle to "Giving Myself" sung by the unbelievably beautiful voice of Pat Collins. We are talking serious goose bumps here.

After the ceremony the Bride & Groom were whisked away for pictures in their Excalibur Limo. The Bridal Party followed them in their matching Hummer Limos provided by Indy Class Act Limo. They were beautiful and got everyone where they needed to be on time and safe.

Ken Cave Photography was the photographer and boy was he hopping! I always love working with Ken but he did an exceptional job dealing with the large Bridal Party and all the last minute changes. Thank you Ken!! I can't wait to see all of the pictures - but you can get a small taste of his great work with a few of the pictures below.

The reception was held at Celebrations at Sycamore Sports. Because there were so many guests, the Bride & Groom decided to ask the church across the street for over-flow parking and provided a Horse-drawn wagon for shuttle service. Breezy Lane Carriage company did a great job, were VERY flexible and everyone loved the unique shuttle option.

Celebrations was over-flowing with people ready to party! We utilized every little bit of space they had to offer. Indy Photo Booths were in the foyer offering one of their new products "Flip Books" for the guests to create and have fun with. I even got into the action! Thank you so much Beth for making room in your packed schedule to accommodate Taneasha's wedding. The guests loved the flip books!

Taneasha's cousin created an eye-popping candy buffet which was pretty much cleaned out within an hour. Because we had at least 60 kids, Taneasha provided a separate kids reception complete with their own DJ, buffet, and night club atmosphere. I do believe their DJ was even louder than the main DJ - but the kids LOVED it! Great job Taneasha!

The main room was stunning with paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling, beautiful centerpieces, and a huge head table. Bob and Roseanne at Celebrations did a FABULOUS job preparing their building for this wedding and are always a joy to work with. American Party Time provided all of the extra rentals and even came out when they weren't scheduled so we could get extra chairs set up. Party Time & their staff is ALWAYS great to have involved with an event & I can't thank them enough for their help.

The catering was provided by Windmill Grill and they were hopping all night long. The Bride & Groom wanted a surf n turf meal so there was grilled steaks and shrimp along with roasted red potatoes, salad and rolls. Yummy!! They went all out and the Windmill worked HARD all night long to give the guests a dream night of service. Thank you so much Anastasia, Tom & Carol!

While Taneasha and Delmo did have a cake to cut, they provided cup cakes to their guests and they were all place on a very tall cup cake tree made by Delmo's friend. This was really cool and of course, the cake & cup cakes were delicious. One of my favorites, Erin Enright provided the sweets. I always joke with her that 20lbs of my body are a direct result of her cakes. But hey - occupational hazard right? :) As you can see from the cake topper, this is a very fun-loving couple.

Taneasha's Uncle videotaped the ENTIRE event and put up with my running around and last-minute changes. He did a great job. Ambrose Freeman was the DJ and played a great reception. Who else can get 400 people up on the dance floor for the Cupid Shuffle? That is a huge feat in itself! And I have to give a really big "shout out" to my girl Jerria who was the MC for the evening. Girl, you rocked! AND you made my job easier & I always love that.

As you can see from the pictures - this party was rockin'. I had a lot of fun working with both Taneasha & Delmo. I seriously hope that Taneasha's blood pressure has gone down into manageable levels now that this epic event is over, but I have a feeling that she will find something else to replace all the time that will be open now that she is MARRIED!

Tonight I had the PLEASURE of spending the evening with a group of fabulous young ladies. I was invited by Pi Beta Phi at Purdue University to speak to them about my illustrious job as a wedding planner. I had so much fun talking about what I do! We went over costs, traditions, ideas and all of the fun stuff that goes along with wedding planning.

Being with these extremely intelligent young women tonight makes me so proud to be a woman. These ladies are our future - and they well-spoken, respectful and a lot of fun to be around.

I left with the invitation to come back and hang with them. I would LOVE to! Ladies, be careful what you wish for - you just might get it :)

Thanks again for letting me come. Now - GET BACK TO STUDYING SO YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD!!!

Kokomo Fall Bridal Gala

It is that time again. The Kokomo Fall Bridal Gala is this Sunday at Rozzi's Continental Ballroom from 1-4. You can pre-register at www.KokomoBridalGala.com and get tickets there as well. It is a sold-out show so you will have the chance to speak with all kinds of professional vendors whose sole purpose is to get you your dream wedding.

Congratulations Lindsey & Joey Dyer!

What a great day for an incredible event 10 years in the making!

I had such a great time with Joey and Lindsey that I am really sorry that it is over. This is a very unique couple - Lindsey is very laid-back an easy-going and Joey is very detailed and organized. I had Joey on speed dial - not Lindsey! In fact, his family called him "Groomzilla" but I am here to tell you that he was the opposite, maybe a bit high-strung, but he was a joy to work with. (You know I love you Joey).

The ceremony was held at St. Patrick's Catholic church and was presided over by Fr. Ted Dudzinski. It was a gorgeous mass (the beauty of the church doesn't hurt either) and went seamlessly. After the couple was pronounced, they had a Raining Romance flower ball to rain petals over them as they walked to their limo provided by Lafayette Limo. They always to a great job. It was stunning!

The reception was held at Rozzi's Continental Ballroom and was wonderfully decorated with the beautiful flowers of Karen Peelle. Lindsey wanted bright colors and Karen did a spectacular job! The whole room was extremely inviting and laid out perfectly - but then the Rozzi's rock. Of course the food was delicious - but it always is. And of course, the party would have been boring if not for Jeff at X-Sight Music. He actually got 200 people up to do the Hokey Pokey & the Chicken Dance. Now THAT'S a DJ!

The whole event was photographed by my buddy Mike Wise - and as always, I cannot wait to see all of the pictures. Well, except for one - I hear he took a picture with me and a few pieces of cake at the reception. All I can say is that it is my duty to try all cake! I stand by my right to eat cake! Speaking of the cake or should I say CAKES, they were all done by J. Edwards Chocolates and were DELICIOUS! There were also chocolate covered strawberries. A full dessert table overflowing with sinful treats. Now seriously, how is a girl supposed to lose weight? But the coolest thing was the Groom's cake. Because both Lindsey and Joey are pharmacists, J.Edwards created a cake in the shape of a prescription bottle. Very creative and unique.

I can't finish this blog without mentioning my new friend Jason. Jason is Joey's brother and a really cool guy - we danced and had fun the whole day. I love it when I get to know the family of my couples and to be able to call them friends after - it is a big bonus.

This family (and their friends) are wonderful people. You could see the excitement on every one's face to be celebrating the official union of two people that have been together so long. I really had a GREAT time and had the chance to party right along with them. AND, we were able to celebrate the 34th anniversay of family friends who just happened to be the parents of a past Groom. Small world eh?

Lindsey and Joey, you are truly fabulous people and I wish you nothing but bliss in your marriage. Thank you for this opportunity and Congratulations!

What a GORGEOUS day for Kiley and Mark's beautiful wedding! The weather was perfect at 75 degrees and a bright sunny sky - you could tell that God was smiling down on this wonderful couple and their families.

I met Kiley and her Mom, Lynda, just under a year ago at the Kokomo Fall Bridal Gala and I have had a ball working with them ever since. Kiley is a very detail-oriented woman who knows what she wants (I LOVE that in a woman!) Not to mention she is drop-dead gorgeous - that always helps!

Kiley knew right off the bat what she wanted. The colors were burnt orange and burgundy wine. She did an excellent job branding her day with everything from the gift bags and the seating chart right down to the decorations on the table. Everything was done in a very simple yet elegant way.

The ceremony was held at the Ritz Charles Chapel and this unique space was almost full of wonderful family and friends. Thank you to Ann Clidence, the Chapel coordinator, for all of your help! My favorite musicians, the Miranda String Quartet played beautifully, as always, and the stunning flowers were designed by J.P. Parker Flowers in Indy. They always to an amazing job and they created the exact look Kiley was going for.

After the ceremony, officiated by the Bride's good friend, Ryan Howell, the guests were treated to cocktails and appetizers in the Garden Pavilion. This building is a really a lovely site because it is totally glassed-in. Kiley had various shapes of chinese lanterns hanging throughout the hall which really filled the space well.

The space was separated into two areas: first, the cocktail area. It had several cocktail tables peppered around the room and a white leather sofa, chair and table so guests could mingle in style and comfort. The food was overflowing as was the bar and guests were treated to another hour of the Miranda String Quartet.

When the couple and bridal party was announced, my favorite - Jeff with X-Sight Music was there to get the party started. I can't forget to mention that the photographer was another one of my favorites - Mike Wise. I love it when I get to work with not only the best, but my friends as well. The pictures will be stunning. Look on my website in the Gallery in a month or two to see his great work.

The Bride even had the forethought to get a limo service to serve as a free shuttle to those that partied a little too hard. Integrity Limo did a fine job and were very flexible. I usually don't get to know the Groom very well, and often meet him for the first time at the rehearsal like I did with Mark. But this is a really cool guy - very fun-loving and humorous. I can see why Kiley fell in love with him. They are a great couple.

Everything worked the way it was supposed to. The Ritz Charles staff did an excellent job with EVERYTHING and the Bride, Groom and their families were happy. The Bridesmaids and Groomsmen were a joy to work with - that is my idea of a GREAT DAY!

I was honored to work with this family and all of their friends. I hope they have nothing but a blissful life ahead of them. Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. Simmons!

A New York City Wedding Extraveganza

Most of you know that I just returned from attending a wedding in New York City. This was my cousin Stephanie's wedding and all I can say is she ROCKED IT!

Yes, it was cool being in lower Manhattan and seeing the sights with my family, but as a wedding planner, I was anxious to see how this wedding was planned. Actually, I was more like a kid in a candy store - soaking up all the delicious ideas and beautiful decor.

The wedding was on Sunday night but the festivities started Saturday morning with a family brunch at the couples' apartment in upper Manhattan. The view was stunning from the "Sun Deck" a.k.a the roof, which was furnished with tables, chairs and beautiful plants and flowers. We were greeted with cute gift bags that had maps, itineraries, coupons, candy, cookies and an "I Love New York" t-shirt. My daughter quickly pronounced the shirt hers. They had a great spread, but what I remember was the strawberry cheesecake - enough said.

We then did a little sight seeing and rested at our hotel (which was the size of my pantry) and got dressed for the rehearsal dinner at Uptown Lounge. Stephanie and John are very laid back and easy going people. They chose to skip the rehearsal and just do the dinner. This alone would throw most Brides into a tizzy, but Stephanie was just relaxed and enjoying herself. That's the way it is supposed to be.

After dinner we went to Times Square and back to our itty bitty hotel room and crashed for the evening. The next morning we got up for breakfast, took a very short walk and found ourselves at Ground Zero. Words cannot describe the feelings you experience standing in such a monumental area. We could feel the presence of the people lost and awed at the sheer size of the destruction. Now it is a large construction zone - constructing the Freedom Tower and 2 reflecting ponds on the site where each tower stood. May we never forget the heroic actions so many performed that day.

After Ground Zero we hopped on a boat and took a 2 hour tour around Manhattan. We saw Lady Liberty standing in all her glory. Pictures just don't do her justice. And after that, back to the hotel to change for the wedding.

Both the ceremony and reception were held at the Bridgewaters in lower Manhattan (Seaport). It was a very unique space - a loft-like area that fit the style well. Stephanie did an EXCELLENT job of branding her wedding with the Two Love Birds logo. It was on everything and really pulled it together.

The flowers were primarily Gladiolas and Hydrangeas - very classy and not over-done. Unfortunately, I only have one picture of Stephanie & it is blurry at that - but you can still see how absolutely gorgeous she is! After the ceremony, we were invited into another section of the room for cocktails. You could get full on just this! The food was wonderful and the flow was very relaxed.

Dinner was a choice of Fillet or Sea Bass. Uh...Fillet please! and the whole night was filled with a flowing bar and ever-present desserts that seemed to appear out of nowhere. The cake was red velvet with chocolate and Carmel sauce. Yummy! This is where my diet was truly shot - but what the heck right?

After we were danced and talked out, we dragged ourselves to the front door where we were each presented with favors of a ceramic breakfast bowl, spoon, morning blend coffee and cookies. Sparklers were handed to us as we left to send the Bride and Groom off in a fire of light. Too cool.
Unfortunately, we had to leave very early the next morning. I felt similar to what I imagine Cinderella felt after she left the ball. Weddings are a chance to escape the everyday and CELEBRATE the commitment that two people make to each other, their families and God.

Thank you Stephanie & John for allowing us to be a part of such a very special day. We love you both and wish you a lifetime of happiness!

A Creative Alternative to a Guest Book

This is one of the coolest ideas I have seen in a long time! Everyone knows that no one really looks at a traditional guest book but it is important to get a record of the people who attend your wedding. This is solved by this really unique "family tree" product.

I saw it at my cousin's wedding in New York City this past weekend and I FELL IN LOVE! Not only is it creative, but it is a really unique way to celebrate the important people that came to share your special day. It is also a great visual to hang up in your new home.

You get a bare tree personalized with your names and you provide a colored ink for your guests to dip their tumb print in. They place their "leaf" print on a branch and use a fine-tip sharpie to write their name. BRILLIANT and very very cute!

Up on the roof top

This is the beautiful view from the bride and groom's (Stephanie and John) apartment building. It is overlooking the east river and the Washington bridge.

We had a delightful brunch with family we haven't seen in a long time and Stephanie treated us with gift bags filled with new York treats including an "I love new York" t-shirt which Julia promptly claimed as hers.

Tonight we head to the uptown lounge for the rehearsal dinner. We will take the subway which is surprisingly easy and enjoyable.

It has been a great trip and looking forward to the wedding tomorrow. Now - rest time!

The Tharps visit Cake Boss

We arrived at the famous Carlos Bakery of TLC's Cake Boss" at 7:30 - when it closes. BUT, we still got several great pictures and saw Grace, buddy's oldest sister working behind the counter.

People wait in line for 4 hours to get in so they close the line at 5:30. As much as I love cake, I am not sure anything is worth waiting in line for 4 hours unless it is lined in gold.

I delivered my 8 year old's letter to Buddy to the man guarding the door. And he then gave it to Grace.

This is a picture of julia in front of the bakery. So ends our brush with fame. But it was fun!

New York City Here I Come!

This weekend I get the privilege of going to New York City for my cousin's wedding. We will be staying in the financial district which is right around ground zero and at the southern part of Manhattan.

The wedding is at the ultra exclusive Bridgewaters and I am looking forward to talking to as many wedding professionals there as I can. New York City is very different from the Midwest but a wedding is a wedding right?

We are also going to see Buddy of TLC's "Cake Boss" and if i don't bring home a canoli for my kids I am in big trouble.

Your Guest List: Why it Should be The First Thing You Do

Too many people wait to complete their guest list until after they have booked many of their vendors. This is an extremely risky thing to do because you may think you will only have 125 people, but when you get the list of names from everyone involved, it can quickly grow to 200 or more! This can be a serious problem if the reception hall you have already booked only holds 150.

Now your only choices are to cut people from the list which is usually not very easy to do, or worse, to lose your deposit and choose another hall.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it happens all the time. A bride gets engaged and wants to jump into all of the fun stuff - not sit down and pour through address books. That is totally understandable but not practical.

As soon as you have set the date, think of how many guests you want. Sit down with both sets of parents so you can get a good idea of how many people will be on the list. Then you will have a good foundation to start your planning!

Hotel Blocks and How They Are SUPPOSED to Work

I am working with a fabulous Bride who is getting married on September 4th and we are having a major issue with the hotel she chose to place her hotel block. So I figured this would be a perfect blog topic for those of you who either don't know what a block is or how they work.

A hotel block is what Brides use to reserve a large number of rooms for their wedding guests. This "block" of rooms is set aside for the Bride's guests to call in and reserve, usually at a reduced rate. Most hotels ask you to reserve at least 10 rooms in order to get a reduced rate. Brides do not pay for these rooms. They are simply pulled out of general population so the hotel will not sell them before the wedding happens. The Brides are then given a "release date" when the hotel will put the rooms not reserved back into their inventory for anyone to call in and make a reservation.

Generally, most hotel guests need a room with two double beds because they are traveling as a family or they want to share with someone else to cut down costs. The sales person you speak with at the hotel will ask if you want to reserve a certain number of double beds or king beds in order to accommodate your guests' needs. If they don't, they usually reserve more double beds automatically.

However, this hotel, which is part of a very large & well-known hotel chain, is now telling us 3 weeks before the wedding that they can NOT guarantee the guests double beds because they are sold out. My Bride reserved these rooms almost 2 years ago! They say that their hotel blocks are strictly used for negotiation purposes. In my 10 years as a wedding planner, I have never encountered this. I am not sure if the hotels I have worked with in the past are just better-run facilities or if this is a rare occasion. But either way, it is extremely frustrating and very unprofessional. Needless to say, I will never be using this hotel again.

So, the lesson of the day for anyone reserving a room block:

BE PROACTIVE!

Make sure that you not only negotiate a great price, but get them to guarantee a specific amount of rooms for your block and have them put it in your contract. This way you will know that your guests will be taken care of.

Thank you to Mrs. Cathy Bailey for allowing me the opportunity to help with a beautiful Bridesmaids luncheon for her niece Summer. It was one of the most unique events I have done since I wasn't actually present the day of the event because I was on vacation. BUT, I had FABULOUS vendors that worked in my stead and put on an incredible "Martha Stewart" garden luncheon at their family cabin in the country.

Rozzi's Catering did a great job with the food and the service (as always)and provided an incredible menu for all of the ladies. Jefferson House of Flowers created the beautiful centerpieces and also made corsages for all of the women in the bridal party. Their designs looked beautiful with the navy colors under the white tent. Photographer extraordinaire, Carol Lindskoog, took pictures of the entire event so the family can have a detailed scrapbook of the day. My favorite violinist, Joan White, played beautiful music on the front porch as guests arrived for that classy touch only Martha Stewart, I mean, Crista Tharp can give. :) And of course, American Party Time provided all of the rentals, set them up & tore them down. I can't say how much I love it when they do that!

I have decided though, I do not EVER want to do an event that I am not physically present at. It makes my blood pressure rise just thinking about it. However, a HUGE thank you to Jennifer Rozzi for going out of her way to make it work. I love that I have incredibly talented and dependable professionals to work with! You make my job so much easier.

This adorable couple proves that romance is still alive even in their 38th year of marriage. What's even cooler is that they are my parents, along with us on our family vacation. My dad has always been a romantic and my mom has always "put up" with him buying her jewelry and gifts. Remember, being a newlywed is a state if mind. Congratulations to my Grandparents; Chuck and Phyllis Kuznicki, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary yesterday!

What a wonderful day we had - seeing people that have been a huge part of my Grandparents' lives celebrating with them on such a momentous event. It is such a joy to see that a marriage cannot only survive but THRIVE through joys, sorrows, ups, downs, moves and life.

Thank you Grandma & Grandpa for the incredible example to gave us throughout our lives. You are directly responsible for 33 people being in this world & indirectly responsible for the joy of countless others.

The Tharp Family - On T.V.?

So I had a colleague of mine make a great suggestion at our business lunch today....

In July, The Tharp clan is heading to Disney - in our van. Yes, 11 people trekking down to Orlando during peak busy season (and the hottest time of the year) all in the name of Mickey Mouse.

Needless to say, this will be quite the adventure. That leads me back to the beginning of this blog. I was discussing our impending chaos when my friend said, "you should call TLC because that is a show I would watch!" That got me to thinking......

Why couldn't we film our adventure and prove to everyone how much fun it is to have a "super-sized" family and that you actually CAN leave your home! This also ties in perfectly with an idea I had rattling around in my head but couldn't quite nail down. I had been contemplating doing a video blog in conjunction with this written one - but couldn't figure out how to do it.

What if...now, go with me here... I keep writing this blog, but do a weekly video blog of my family. We will tackle a single issue every episode which has to do with weddings, marriage, parenting and life. Obviously, we would do "The Tharps Do Disney" The kids love the idea, especially Julia, who thinks she will become a STAR!

So, my question to you all is this:

Aisle Runner Solution!

Thank you to Randy Morris - a great Father of the Bride, for solving a huge problem that has plagued people in the wedding industry for years!

Many of you know that I absolutely HATE aisle runners. They are the #1 dangerous wedding item out there - able to take down Brides and Bridesmaids in a single step!

Another reason I hate them is because they are a pain in the butt to roll down the aisle. The manufacturers always give you a short string or rope in order to roll it down the aisle. It is always too snug or it just does not roll out easily - inevitably making the poor ushers assigned to roll it down look ridiculous as they struggle with the darn thing.

So as we were pondering this very issue on Friday night, Randy immediately comes up with the idea. Poof! Just like that. I knew the ramifications of this brilliant invention immediately. He suggested using a pvc pipe, inserting it in the allotted tube and placing nice end caps on either side. Voila!! We had a perfect solution and the darn thing rolled out beautifully during the ceremony.

It is one of those things where you say to yourself, "why didn't I think of that!" So I offered Randy the $2.03 it took to create this magnificent invention, but he graciously allowed me to keep it with the agreement that I give him the credit.

So here is to you - Mr. Randy Morris, for being extremely creative on your feet. You win the "YOU ROCK" award!

Go Boilermakers!

Amanda & Thomas Cornelius were the epitome of a gorgeous couple on Saturday as they tied the knot after 3 1/2 years. This is a really awesome couple; fun, loving and liked to be a bit playful. A perfect combination! Sometimes wedding planners are blessed not only with a great couple - but a great family to work with and this was definately the case here.

I first met with Amanda and her Mom a year and a half ago. Amanda was on it! She was one of the most organized Brides I have ever seen! To illustrate that point I will tell you that all the items for the reception were tucked lovingly in a tub all labeled with a detailed post-it note. I love you Amanda!!

And Thomas was present at most of our meetings, if not all of them. He already knew the most precious phrase a Groom could learn, "whatever you want." He is a good man and I know they will have a wonderful marriage.

The ceremony was at Chapel Hill Christian Church, presided by Pastor Steve Allen. Not only did he give them a beautiful service, but he is a very funny guy. I love that! Everyone we worked with at Chapel Hill was great. Kim Shelton was the vocalist and her voice was gorgeous. A special shout-out to Scott who was an immense help!

Bowden Flowers provided the beautiful flowers. The Bride's color was yellow and the flowers complimented it wonderfully with yellow roses and hydrangeas. Everything looked beautiful.

The reception was held at Casa Bella - and was magnifico! Yes, the building is stunning and the food incredible, but the staff is great to work with - a definite plus. Jeff Hodson with X-Sight Music was our entertainment for the evening and was perfect, as usual. That man knows how to get people up and dancing.

Julie Marchese with Mar-K-Z Photography was taking beautiful shots all day. She must have taken thousands of pictures and I loved working with her. I cannot wait to see those pictures. Hurry Julie - hurry!

On Task Media was hopping all day filming the big event. I know he was trying something different and I hope it worked out for him. He was working HARD and I was very impressed. I LOVE working with true professionals and this wedding was full of nothing but.

All In Good Taste provided the cake - and OMG! I was in total heaven. This is why I am not a size 6. Occupational hazard I guess - but I enjoy every minute of the sinful indulgences. Great job ladies!!

This was a family that you want to be around. You can feel the love everywhere you go. We need more people out there like this. Shelly, Amanda's Mom was so kind and wonderful to work with. Megan, Amanda's sister was not only gorgeous (as was everyone in their family), but a great babysitter as well :). Kevin, Thomas' brother, who looks NOTHING like him, gave an incredible toast. I love it when they get the room laughing. Thomas' parents were great people as well. And I have to give HUGE credit to Amanda's father Randy, who seriously solved a big problem that every wedding planner has experienced. Watch for my next blog for details. Seriously Randy - you ROCK!

So another marriage begins and my prayers have been and will always be with Amanda, Thomas & their family. I wish you nothing but happiness and joy. Always remember that you have a huge community behind you that will always be there to love and support you. Thank you for the honor of being with you at the start of your journey together.

How do you do it?

I am CONSTANTLY asked this question. It seems that having 9 kids all under 13, owning a successful business and writing books garners a lot of attention. To me it's just life.

I am not your conventional wedding planner - I don't scour the Internet all day looking for the coolest trends and newest gizmos. Most of my time is spent working directly with my Brides and their family. When I am not doing that, I am working on new products for DIY Brides so they can do what I do - themselves. I like creating things that help couples focus on the union of their two families and their upcoming marriage. Unfortunately, I think that is what is really lacking in today's society - a focus on the marriage.

So - to answer the question, "how do you do it," I can only say - I love what I do. I wake up every morning thinking about what incredible things will happen to me & the people I work with. In between vendor calls, and meetings with Brides, I am talking to my studly husband and playing with my kids. This to me is marriage and the wonderful experiences it brings to me are innumerable.

Why am I writing this? Because it is so important for Brides and Grooms to see beyond their wedding day and envision the monumental journey they are about to embark upon. There will be lots of joys and unfortunately sorrows along the way, but that is the beauty of your partnership. You will get through it together.

Wow - what a ride this has been!

Friday, Zsarenet & Ja'Rell became husband and wife on live T.V. and it was a smashing success! First I want to thank Fox 59 for allowing me the privilege of being the wedding planner for this incredible event. The people there are unbelievably talented and gracious and I would jump at the chance to work with them again.

Secondly, I had the chance to work with some of the best wedding vendors that Indiana has to offer. The Ritz Charles was not only beautiful and great to work with, but they threw a great party - sparing no expense for our winning couple. The food was wonderful and I believe I will be dreaming of that steak in the days to come.

A Classic Party Rentals helped to transform the Ritz with the couples' vision of Tiffany Blue and chocolate colors. The entire event from the Garden Pavilion to the reception hall was stunning in the beautiful linens, chivari chairs, and all the other details that came together so perfectly.

J.P. Parker Flowers out-did themselves with BEAUTIFUL floral arrangements for every aspect of the day. Zsarenet wanted top make sure that her flowers "popped" and they really did. JP Parker used a very pastel foundation and added vibrant colors like orange & bright fuchsia to give the Bride exactly what she wanted. They were stunning!! Thank you for giving Zsarenet exactly what she wanted!

Moyer jewelers provided beautiful rings for the couple. They actually made me want to get married again - but I doubt my husband would go for that! Sophia's Bridal provided the beautiful dress and the tuxes - giving Zsarenet her old hollywood look. Thank you Andraea!

Brian McGuckin was the photographer and did a fabulous job. The pictures are wonderful as was the slide show he created of the couple before the wedding day. I had the chance to see the pictures before I left and I was amazed at his talent. I can't wait to get them so I can put them on my website gallery. Keep your eyes out for when that happens!

We were blessed to have Sunny Moon as our entertainment for the day. One of the perks of my job is working with professionals that really know what they are doing - and Sunny is definitely one of those people! The live aspect of this event was a bit unique, but Sunny took it in stride and went with the flow. Thank you for your flexibility Sunny!

The crew of Salon 01 did a great job with hair and make-up, I only wish I had them do mine - but then who looks at the wedding planner any way right?

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention my peeps at The UPS Store who provided the beautiful invitations. Yes - The UPS Store! They are serious when they say "they are more than shipping!" They are my favorite place to send people for invitations. They do a great job.

I was blessed to have Mary Ann & Hannah with me - although Hannah did a lot of schmoozing with the celebrities and we have the pictures to prove it! Being "backstage" at an event like this really shows you how much work goes into doing a live show. A big "SHOUT-OUT" goes to producers Cheryl & Olivia for making it happen & doing the best they could to keep me out of the live shots! They even got into the fun by line dancing in the back of the room until the Groom's brother got them on the dance floor. I told you guys that was going on the blog!!

Ahh - what fun. Finally, I want to thank the couple, Zsarenet & Ja'Rell Smith. You two jumped through a lot of hoops to get here - but now you are husband and wife. I wish you nothing but joy and happiness for your family. Don't forget to let us know when Butter gets a little brother or sister! God Bless you all and thanks for all of the fun!

Yesterday I was at Sophia's Bridal Boutique with Zsarenet to pick out 3 dresses that Indianapolis gets to choose for her. The Owner, Andraea, was WONDERFUL to work with and her shop is fabulous! She is being extremely generous with the gift of a free wedding gown and a free tux for the groom.

Zsarenet looked stunning in every dress she tried on, but the top 3 became very obvious to everyone there as she tried on styles from strapless to halter top. She does have one that she absolutely LOVES and hopes that Indianapolis will vote for the dress she picked out. Take a look below:

Lindsay & Ralph's Hot Pink and Orange Wedding

March 13, 2010 was a perfect day.

Well, the weather may not have been perfect, but it was a great day nonetheless. Lindsay & Ralph finally tied the knot at Shiloh United Methodist in Kokomo, IN. Lindsay had a vision of very bright pinks and oranges for the day and it worked out beautifully. Bowden flowers was responsible for the beautiful arrangements and they did exactly what Lindsay wanted. The ceremony was beautifully done by pastor Jon Tice and the couple threw in a bit of their personalities when they recessed down the aisle to "Celebration" by Kool & the Gang. The guests went wild!

After a quick photo shoot by Ken Cave Photography, who did an excellent job, the party started at Celebrations at Sycamore Sports just down the road. Celebrations did a wonderful job setting up the reception just the way Lindsay envisioned it. There was a great buffet provided by the Windmill Grill and fabulous entertainment provided by the incomparable Jeff Hodson with X-Sight Music.

Lindsay and Ralph were our grand prize winners from the Kokomo Bridal Gala 2 years ago and it has been pure joy working with them. Thank you for allowing all of us to be a part of your beautiful day!

WEDDING DISASTERS AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM:

First, you need to remember that whatever happens – you will marry the love of your life and the party is secondary. It is hard to let go of the day that you planned so meticulously, but if you focus on the fact that the two of you are beginning your life together, than the other stuff just fades away.

As a wedding planner, I see mistakes happen all the time. So how do you deal with something that falls apart on your special day?

1. Keep an open mind. PERFECT is unattainable – so most likely, something will go wrong. But if you keep your mindset open to the positives that will happen that day and know that whatever happens can be dealt with, then you will have conquered the hardest part.
2. Always have a Plan B. Don’t focus too much on what could go wrong, but make sure you have steps in place in case weather turns bad. Once you have them in place forget about them and plan for the way you want it to go. You will be comforted with the knowledge that you are prepared in case something goes wrong.
3. Have a sense of humor. I admit, it is hard to see the humor when a vendor doesn’t show – but this is where you can depend on friends and family to help you. Laughter solves everything.
4. Be creative. What if a vendor doesn’t show or your cake falls. Most likely in these cases you are under the gun and need a quick fix. This is where you can turn to your family and friends for help. If your photographer doesn’t show – ask several friends to take pictures for you. If your cake falls have someone run to a grocery store to get a replacement, if the DJ’s equipment fails – look for someone’s iPod.
5. Be Forgiving. Stuff happens. You need to be able to let it go so you can get back to celebrating your day. The wedding day is great & you will always remember it, but it is the marriage that matters. Hopefully, when you celebrate your 50th wedding anniversary you remember the wonderful times you had as a couple and not that your cake fell on your wedding day.

Blissfully Simple Wedding Planning

To Pre-nup or Not to Pre-Nup?

In this throw away society we have, divorce has become a much more common thing. In fact, it has almost become expected which is why I am writing this post.

We have a 51% divorce rate in this country. It is never a pleasant experience and for those families that go through it, it can leave lasting scars that are hurtful at best.

So, this leads us to the question, "should we have a pre-nuptial agreement?"

Be prepared because I have a very passionate view on this.

I do not believe in pre-nups - for ANY reason. I don't care if you are marrying a millionaire or if you are just trying to "protect" yourself. A pre-nup, in my opinion, is an automatic "get out free" card.

Why in the world would you prepare to fail? It makes the intending separation of the couple "easier." But does it? How many times have you heard of someone fighting their pre-nup in order to get more money or more property? What is the point?

A Marriage is a contract that you enter into willingly and hopefully, well educated and ready for. It is not an easy journey for all people but you stood before God (in most cases) and recited vows; specifically, for better or worse & for richer or for poorer. Both the top reasons for getting divorces.

If you have ANY concerns or thoughts that this marriage is not right for you - DON'T DO IT! It is that simple. Don't use the pre-nup as protection because it is anything but. It does not help you in any way.

We need more emphasis on how to prepare for marriage and the issues that arise so you can be prepared. Ask anyone who has been married for over 30 years and they will tell you it isn't all a bed of roses, but it was worth the time and effort to make it work.

So I suppose my final thought would be this: if you or your spouse can so easily forgo and ignore the contract of marriage - what's to say they will respect a pre-nuptial contract.

Top Wedding Trends for 2010

By the beginning of December, wedding planners are constantly asked about the new “hot thing” for the next year. 2010 is no different as Brides are consumed with finding the trend that could set their wedding apart from all of the others.

Trends come and go – something to be thankful for when looking back at wedding fashion in the 1980s. However, we are seeing some interesting things for the first time and Brides are really taking advantage of the options.

Taking Responsibility

It seems to me that this is the first time Brides and their Grooms are realizing that they don’t have to model their wedding after a celebrity in order to have a great day. Brides are taking responsibility for their own choices, tastes and budget when deciding what they want. This is a great thing to see and it leads into the next trend which has become very popular.

Making it Their Own

Couples are looking at tradition like a starting point rather than a rule book. They are putting their own twist on things and aren’t apologizing for it. Their weddings have become more intimate and focus on their families and guests. They aren’t hampered by what “used to be” and go for what works for them. I participated in a wedding where the couple chose to have ceremonial cocktails instead of wedding cake. Their guests were treated to a perfectly chilled dirty martini or a margarita as it slide down the ice shoot of a really cool ice sculpture. The Bride and Groom Wowed their guests even further when they were surprised with an incredible jazz singer singing “At Last” at the very moment the Baked Alaska Dessert was being lit on fire. They knew what they wanted and went for it.

Personality over Etiquette

The personality of both the Bride and Groom has become crucial to setting wedding apart. One wedding that immediately comes to mind is where the couple married in the Groom’s Grandparent’s backyard. The Bride was barefoot and chose to have no attendants but asked all the women in the family to wear bright colors like red, hot pink, orange and yellow. They had a bluegrass band, Mexican candy hanging from the trees and a piñata for the kids. The food was all prepared by the two families and it was one of the most memorable and inspirational weddings I have ever witnessed.

Dramatic Colors

Very hot colors and unusual textures are being used more than neutral tones. Hot pink satins and very ornate damasks are gracing the tables at the reception and creating stunning and beautiful atmospheres that are extremely unique.

Fruits and Vegetables

Incorporating fruits and veggies either in the centerpieces or decorations is very popular. Brides are also turning to their front yard for inspiration. Use what nature provides and it will be less expensive and very different.

Headpieces

Brides are choosing to create their own headpieces with jewelry or even feathers to get a much different look than the traditional veil.

Cakes

Bakers are outdoing themselves with unbelievable cake designs that look so real you don’t even want to eat them. This is for both the wedding cake and the Groom’s cake which is making a comeback.

The thing to remember about trends is that YOU make them. Future Brides will be attending your wedding and taking notes about things they see and like. That is how a trend is created. So don’t get too hung up on what other people are doing – put some thought into it and create your own. You never know, it might just be the next “hot thing!”

How do you plan a wedding if you aren’t a millionaire?

These days, Brides are inundated with T.V. shows that promote lavish and platinum weddings. It is nothing to see a Bride in one of these shows drop $10,000 on a wedding gown or hires a celebrity florist that will cost more than most average Brides’ yearly salary.

So what do you do if you are not one of these “Platinum Brides?” Is there no hope for your wedding because you have a budget that falls somewhere under the national debt? Of course not.

As a wedding consultant, I hear from Brides every day that think that their wedding is doomed because they can’t spend $50,000. They get caught up in the magic and glamour of weddings depicted on T.V., Bride’s magazines and wedding websites. How does the typical Bride create her dream wedding without the insane price tag?

Be Prepared

I tell every Bride I speak with to create a priorities list. Sit with your Groom and think about what is most important to you. Have you dreamed of a wedding dripping in orchids since you were five? Then this should be number one or number two on your list. Set a list of the top 10 things that are the most important that you have that day and you will have the plan for where you are going to spend your money. Obviously, the higher on the list, the more importance you give. If Videography is not important to you, then you can save money on it and put it towards your flower budget.

Educate Yourself

Arm yourself with tips and trends that will save you money. Make sure you do your homework before meeting with any vendor. There are all kinds of ways to get a beautiful event while saving money. Here are a few:

• Have your wedding on any night other than Saturday. Vendors want to be booked as often as possible and will give great discounts to events that are not on peak days.

• Go for the buffet or family style. Plated meals are by far the most expensive. If you are in the Midwest, most guests like the variety and option to get more if the wish.

• Find a free venue like a park. Obviously, keep the weather in mind, but this could save you up to $1,000.

• Order less wedding cake than you think you need. Not everyone will eat cake and most weddings have it left over. The only time you need to have exact servings is when the cake is served to each person – so have it on a table where guests can pick it up themselves.

• Have your wedding later in the evening. You can opt to have a dessert reception or just a small buffet of appetizers. These are usually shorter as well saving on the time you hire vendors.

• Know what flowers are in season and which are most expensive such as Hydrangeas, Gardenias, Calla Lilies, and Lily of the Valley.

• Choose a Videography package that uses one camera. The more cameras, the more expensive.

• Use things found in nature to use in your decorations. Pumpkins in the fall, poinsettias in winter, potted plants in spring and summer.

• Choose a “Day of Directing” package if you want a wedding coordinator, but can’t afford a full-service package.

What You Can Skip

• Programs. At every wedding I attend there are always programs left. If you feel like you have to have them, print them yourself and only get half as many done as you would think. When you run it – you run out.

• Lined envelopes. Needless to say, they may look nice, but they go straight into the garbage.

• Favors. You are providing a night filled with entertainment and food. There is no need to give everyone a gold-plated name tag holder. No one wants it any way.

• Save-the-Date cards. You can send out emails or call anyone you feel needs to know that far in advance.

• Saving the top of your cake. A lot of bakers are now giving coupons for your first anniversary cake – and it’s fresh!

• Cake Knives. Borrow some from your family members. It will be sentimental and save you $20.

• Disposable cameras. Kids are usually the ones who take advantage of this and you have to pay to have them developed without knowing what is on them.

• Don’t get your dress preserved. The chance your daughter will wear it is very slim. Use it for Christening gowns or other sentimental items.

• Alcohol. You don’t have to have booze to have a great time. Or just offer a signature drink making your expense a lot less painful.

• Assigned seating. People hate being told where to sit and you won’t have to deal with a seating chart or the pesky little name tags.

• The aisle runner. The single most dangerous thing for a Bride. Only reason to have it is if you are dropping real petals and your church demands it. No one can tell the difference between real or fake petals.

Do it Yourself

• Create your own map and accommodations card. This is very simple to do on your own computer and just slip it in with your invitation.

• Buy three candles and decorate them yourself. You can keep them and put them in a prominent place in your new home.

• Make your centerpieces double as gifts for special people.

• Have a non-alcoholic toast. Obviously, there is sparkling cider but you can get more creative. Use a drink that means something to you and your Groom.

• Mix-up the guestbook. A lot of Brides use a matt surrounding their wedding picture and hang it up in their home afterwards. No one looks at guest books after the wedding.

• Does someone have a really cool car you can borrow? Often, Brides will have a family member willing to let them borrow their sports car or classic car.

Don’t be a slave to what celebrity wedding experts are saying “you must have.” Remember, they are not the ones paying for it. Most engaged couples are working or going to school and don’t have the desire or ability to spend a crazy amount of money. Ultimately, you will marry the love of your life and spend the day with close family and friends who will help you celebrate regardless your budget.

How to Make the Most Out of Bridal Shows

Aah, 'tis the season for Bridal Shows.

This is where vendors come out in droves, packed to the gills with special offers and full of promise for lots of new business. And Brides travel many miles, pay to get in and then.....

stay as far away from the vendors as possible in fear that that they may trap them or worse, con them into buying something they don't want.

Sigh.

The fact is, most Brides don't know how to use Bridal Shows to their advantage. Vendors pay A LOT of money to be a part of these shows so they can be at the beck and call of Brides. They want to answer their questions, show them what they can do and most importantly, save the Brides time by all being in one place at one time.

I don't understand why Brides literally seem scared of vendors during these shows. It happens at every one I attend: they all walk down the middle of the aisle with their posse making sure not to make eye contact or to give anyone the impression they are interested. They look like a deer caught in headlights when someone gets through their line of defenses in order to ask them a question.

Brides: this show is for YOU! Use it to learn as much as you can about each vendor. I am constantly asked about the new trends of the year. Here is a chance for you to see them FIRST HAND! How will you get the information you need if you pass them all by?

I promise - we don't bite.

This is what you need to do in order to get everything out of a Bridal Show:

Come prepared. Have a list of vendors you know you want to talk to and have a short list of 5 questions to ask them. Consider the show as one big interview. Instead of running around and meeting each vendor at their own shop - do it here!
Ask for references. Not just from past clients either. Ask for names of vendors that they work with on a regular basis. I can't stress enough how important that vendors "play well with others." Ask vendors at the show if they have ever worked with them before or if they have heard anything about them.
Be Ready. A LOT of vendors book at these shows because we all tend to give great discounts. Have your budget done and your checkbook with you so if you know you have found the right person - BOOK THEM!
Have an open mind. Of course you won't need everyone in the building, but you never know what they have to offer and frankly, they may offer such great discounts you may change your mind. You may already have your dress - but you may find another shop providing great prices on gown preservation. Don't miss out on great opportunities.
Don't go just for free stuff. If you do this, you will be disappointed and nothing annoys a vendor more than a Bride whose first words are, "what are you giving away?" It is rude and you should never do that. Almost all participants in a show will be giving something away, a discount or free services if you are lucky. You will find all of that out - after you talk to the vendor!
Be organized. You may want to take a notebook with you. Write down the names of the vendors you meet and any notes or quotes that you were given. Trust me, at the end of the day you will have a bag full of "stuff" and you will quickly forgot who you talked to and be overwhelmed.

These shows can be such a great resource for Brides - if used correctly! Go into these events with excitement and optimism and you will not only have a great time, but find the perfect people to help you create your dream wedding.

The Benefits of Getting Married

With the New Year I always tend to reflect on the past year and do a little soul searching.

I have been blessed with a wonderful year. I had the pleasure of working with some incredible people and have also shared the sadness of a few people who had life experiences that weren't expected.

As I sat in my parent's living room the day after Christmas, it suddenly hit me. I now know what marriage truly gives a person. The house was filled with my incredible parents; my brother and his beautiful wife and 4 gorgeous children; my chic sister and her brilliant husband; my gorgeous sister; my aunt; BOTH sets of Grandparents, and my husband and 8 kids. The aroma of delicious food was everywhere and the gifts (known as Christmas Carnage in our family) spilled everywhere so there were very few places to sit. Later in the evening we were visited by my Father's cousin and her boyfriend and one of my cousins and his newly expecting wife.

Controlled chaos would be a good way to describe it. It was very loud, very overwhelming, but very enjoyable. Just imagine 12 kids under 12 running around - you'll get the idea! But Christmas is sacred in our family and always will be.

As I sat on the fireplace hearth (much like Humpty-Dumpty being 7 1/2 months pregnant), next to the love of my life, & surveying the damage; I overheard my Father talking to my cousin who will become a Dad for the first time in June.

He said, "Jake, all of this (as he motioned to the house full of people) started 38 years ago when 2 people fell in love. This could be you in 40 years."

While I watched him smile in amazement and a bit of fear - my mind flashed back to all of the wonderful memories I had growing up in this family. Love was always the reason for anything my parents did. They have been a great role model being married for almost 40 years and both sets of my Grandparents have been married for almost 60!

Marriage is Bliss.

There is no other way to describe it. I revel in the different stages my husband and I have shared over the past 19 years together (6 of them dating and 13 married) and I know it will only get better watching our children grow, taking the traditions we learned from our parents and incorporating them into their own family rituals.

If I could tell every engaged couple one thing it would be this: The wedding is going to be a great party and plan for it well - but you have no idea the incredible journey that you are about to embark on together. It will be filled with joy you never imagined and sorrows you don't ever want to comprehend. But you will do it together, facing the plans God has for you like one person.

I thank my parents and their parents for making the sacrifices it took to us to where we are now. I thank all the families that trust me with such a momentous event in their lives and I thank each and every engaged couple for having the courage to be role models for our upcoming generations. Without knowing it - married people are creating something precious:

How to Find the Perfect Caterer

In the search for the perfect caterer you have to be open-minded and savvy.

In this crazy economy, it seems we are seeing more and more caterers pop up because they have chosen to start their own company. Being in business for myself, I completely understand and applaud this.

However, when you are looking for someone to caterer the wedding of your dreams you are looking for more than entrepreneurial spirit.

How do you find the caterer right for your wedding?

Obviously, there are pivotal questions you need to ask yourself first:

What type of atmosphere / service am I looking for? Do you want to go all-out and have plated service with waiters or would you like the flexibility of having a buffet so your guests can go up to refill their plates? Don't forget Family Style - one of my favorite choices. Your guests will be served large plates/bowls of food and the table can serve themselves whatever they want. Much like a family dinner.
How much do I want to pay? If food and service is you first priority - then get ready to pay for it. Plated service is the most expensive. This gives your guests (usually) an entre'e choice and it takes more servers and organization to pull it off. Of course you want good food, but if you would like to save some of your budget for other aspects of your wedding - think of Family Style or Buffet. These are especially popular in the midwest.
How much do I trust this company? Some caterers need a lot of hand-holding. Do you want to put in this much effort if you are paying a lot of money? Or, do you feel very comfortable with their knowledge and expertise? Some Brides give very basic directions and know that the caterer will do an excellent job fullfilling their vision.

Now, what do you ask the caterer?

Is this your profession or a hobby? You want to know this is not their first job.
How long have you been in business? Experience teaches us all a lot! No one is perfect, but if they have a lot of years behind them, chances are they have fixed any problems or they still wouldn't be in business.
Do you have a website? Brides these days are very internet reliant. If they don't have a web presence, they are either new or haven't caught up with the times.
May I have 3 referrences of past clients AND 3 of fellow vendors that you have worked with. This is crucial. Most vendors can come up with 3 people to toot their horn, but finding a fellow vendor is not as easy. It is important that a caterer "play well with others."
As well as your prices, what do you do with left-over food and what happens if we run out? Some caterers will pass on the left-overs to you - some will not. Don't be surprised by that. Good caterers take care of their employees and often take left-overs to a rescue mission. This is frequently extra food they made for "just in case" and isn't really yours to begin with. But a question to ask nonetheless.
What is your deposit and what happens in case of a wedding cancellation or rescheduling? This happens - in fact, it is happening more often. Deposits or retainers are usually non-refundable so be sure you are ready to book.
How many staff members will you have on hand - how many waiters, bussers, and how many in the back? I have found that with a lot of caterers cutting down prices in order to get business, they first cut service. You have to make sure that you have enough to actually serve your wedding properly. Get the numbers in writing. Also, if your reception is in a site that doesn't have an in-house caterer, make sure you know if they will be cleaning the kitchen, rinsing china, and taking out the garbage. These are automatic with experienced caterers, but something you need to confirm.

I know it is scary when hiring vendors for such an important day. But if you do your homework - you will be just fine. If they offer a tasting - take it! I am a firm believer in free tastings as well, but this isn't always possible.

In Kokomo, IN there is no exception to this wide-array of caterers available. I have been blessed to have worked with some great ones. I would have to say my favorite is Rozzi's Catering.

Rozzi's has been in business for over 30 years. Started by their late father, the kids have picked it up and run with it doing an incredible job. Jennifer and JoAnn Rozzi have put their hearts and souls into the business and it is obvious. I know when I work with them, I have nothing to fear. Things will be done the correct way & I won't be (or any Bride for that matter) stuck holding the trash bag. They are a true family business in EVERY sense of the way and you walk away from one of their events feeling not only full but loved.

I am a firm believer of letting people know when they do a great job. So I had to take this opportunity to give a "shout out" to one of the best caterers in central Indiana - Rozzi's Catering. If you are in the area and looking for an outstanding experience - give them a call. You won't be sorry.

Make sure you look around and get as much information as possible. It will only help you be happy with the decision you ultimately make.

Day of Directing Package Promotion

I have been blessed.

Over the past 10 years I have had the joy of working with hundreds of couples as they planned their wedding day. I am rewarded daily with the pleasure of watching their families grow, businesses succeed, and happiness expand.

This got me thinking...

The holidays are quickly approaching and this is the time where we all take time to say thank you for all of our blessings. The best way for me to do this is to "give back."

It has become very obvious to me that in these tough economic times, Brides and Grooms are really struggling to get the perfect day they want WITHOUT all the stress and drama. I know how expensive weddings can be. Brides are being forced to make the decision to plan their weddings without professional help in order to save money.

While this is entirely possible - it is NOT the best option.

Elizabeth was our Grand Prize winner from our winter Bridal Gala last year and she won my services - however, she and her Mom did an INCREDIBLE job planning a stunning wedding on their own!

I stepped in the week of the wedding for Day of Directing and it was abundantly clear that they knew exactly what they wanted and how they were going to do it. Move over Martha Stewart - Michele Bixler is on your tail! This family planned a beautiful wedding from start to finish and it was a pleasure getting to know them.

The ceremony was held at First Congregational Church and was packed with all of their family and friends. The flow of the ceremony was very nice and the height of it was Megan Bixler, Elizabeth's sister-in-law as she sang a beautiful rendition of The Lord's Prayer. I LOVE it when I hear music sung the right way and she hit it right on.

I also had the pleasure of working with Cybil and Brandon New (Cybil and Brandon Photography) for the first time. I really enjoyed being with them both - they are true professionals, are easy to work with and do beautiful work as you can see below. Thank you guys for making my job easier!

One of the unique things about this wedding was the reception hall. Ryan is a Rayl - a name very well known in Kokomo and his father had a large commercial spot open which they transformed into a unique and creative reception site. The families worked tirelessly to take that blank canvas and create the perfect evening for Elizabeth and Ryan and it worked! Souply's (owned by the Rayl's) provided the incredible open bar and the service was excellent.

The food was provided by the incomparable Rozzi's Catering. They set up about 6 stations complete with a pasta station, carving station and a station full of dips, crackers and other delectables. They also had shrimp shooters and bruschetta that welcomed the guests as they arrived. Jennifer, JoAnn and their staff ALWAYS work tirelessly to give their clients more than they expect and they certainly succeeded once again.

The beautiful cake was done by the Pastry Diva. Several flavors included chocolate with chocolate mousse, carrot cake, white with Raspberry - YUMM! Unfortunately, for those of us who love the Diva, this was one of her last cakes because she closes her doors at the end of October. I am sure I speak for everyone when I say we will greatly miss her incredible and sinful desserts!

At every wedding, the entertainment is crucial to the success of the reception. The Bride & Groom were determined to have the band, "The Impalas" and after I heard them I knew why. They rocked the house! They played traditional songs for the dances and then kept the huge dance floor full with hits like, "Proud Mary" & "Son of a Preacher Man." I kept thinking of events I could plug them into - they were fabulous.

All in all this wedding was a hit! Doing weddings as often as I do gives me the incredible opportunities to work with new vendors, and meet interesting people, but most importantly, to play a small part in the story of these families experiencing such joy.

Elizabeth & Ryan: here's to a life of pure joy and happiness. Always know you're friends and family will be there to back you up and do your best to soak in every fabulous moment you have together.

Introducing.. Mr. & Mrs. Matt & Megan Goins!

What an incredible couple!

There are times when you work with a family that you like so much you actually fall in love with them. This includes all of their fabulous friends, who by the way, really know how to party!

When I first met Megan and Matt I was at the Omni's Vendor open house. I could tell they had a very clear vision for their wedding day and I was excited to help them get what they wanted.

As we all know, life loves to throw us little curve balls - and this couple was thrown a BIG one! A priest I know once said, "a love can be so strong between a man and woman that it creates something you actually have to give a name in 9 months." Well - everyone surrounding this couple was thrilled to learn of the impending birth of "Dirk Goins" due in just 2 weeks. He behaved and stayed put during the wedding.

The beautiful ceremony was held at St. Lukes Catholic Church in Indianapolis. Megan had Flowers by Tiffany design BEAUTIFUL flowers out of rich fall colors. They were gorgeous cala lilies and really stood out against the Bridesmaids deep brown dresses.

I have to say, I really enjoyed the men in this party. They were responsible, extremely helpful and very funny. Two of them are local heros and just came back from Iraq. Thank you for your service!

I had the PLEASURE to work with photographer Jessica Strickland and she took my breath away! She was a joy to work with and the pictures she took are going to be breath-taking. On a side note, she is expecting her first child right around the time my 9th is due. To see her work, bending down and running around all night was incredible. I hope I have the chance to work with her again soon.

The reception was at the Omni downtown. Rebecca Raymond was the coordinator for the evening and was great to work with. She had to be quick on her feet because there was a slight issue with the place cards - but she did it & no one knew any better. You know when people do their jobs well because the night goes seamlessly. Thank you Rebecca! I love working at the Omni - they go above and beyond to make their weddings a night to remember. Plus, I got to spend the night there and that is always a nice treat!

The videographer was Jessica from MVP and pure joy to work with. We all worked together to give Matt and Megan a perfect evening. Thanks Jessica!

For a woman who was 9 months pregnant - Megan was radiant and full of energy the ENTIRE day! And she wore HEELS! Hats off to you woman.

And Matt, you can tell that you adore Megan which is so heart-warming for anyone to see. I so enjoyed EVERY minute I worked with you both and I am thrilled at the incredible things coming your way very, very soon.

To the both of you: here is to joy, excitement and surprises. May your life be filled with nothing but happiness.

If you are wondering exactly where to start your wedding planning - wonder no more!

This is the very first place you should start:

The Three Rules of Bridal Survival

If you consistantly keep these 3 rules in your mind while planning your wedding; I guarantee you will not only enjoy the process, but stay organized and focused at the same time.

#1. Do Not Assume!

Don't assume your caterer's idea of classy is your idea of classy.
Don't assume a vendor will hold your date without a signed contract and deposit.
Don't assume your Groom knows when and where to pick up his tux.
Don't assume your parents plan on paying for the wedding.

You get the idea. Everyone has their own idea of "perfect" and their own way of doing things. Make sure you see everything, taste everything, talk about everything and confirm everything.

#2. Write it Down!

Get contracts in writing.
Write down all decisions made at every meeting.
Write down every single picture you want taken.
Write down who will be doing what the day of the wedding.

You will ABSOLUTELY forget something and it is critical you have records of everything you plan.

#3. Do Not Forget

Don't forget that a wedding is a family affair. Make sure you include the people that raised you and got you to this point in your life.
Don't forget to treat EVERYONE (vendors, family, friends) with respect and class.
Don't forget why you are planning a wedding in the first place: to marry the love of your life. The party is great, but it's the marriage that you should concentrate on.

Apply these 3 rules and I promise you your planning experience will be more enjoyable and everything you wanted.

Another perfect little one has entered the world to a great couple. Erica and Bob welcomed their first child, Hunter Browning, into this world July 30th at 7:36 am.

He was 8 lbs 7 oz and 21 inches long. A very good size for mamma - and he is adorable!

Reception Site Coordinators - Not Always Helpful

I have a Bride that hired me to help her with the entire process of her planning. Everything was going smoothly until we had the meeting with the reception site "Event Coordinator". She was anything but helpful and made it clear she was not happy I was there.

I realize that weddings are a big business and that most sites (ceremony & reception) have a resident "coordinator." Their main job description is to make sure you follow their rules, know the details for that night and to help you if you have questions.

What I have a problem with however, is when they interfere with what the Bride wants and doesn't get along with the professional wedding planner.

Don't get me wrong - I am not an arogant person. I have great respect for every vendor, and never bark orders. But why do these people (usually women) have to be rude, insistant and down-right beligerant?

They are NOT trained to help a Bride as a professional is - it is that simple.

Don't believe me?

Ask them what they will do for you if the photographer doesn't show? Ask them if the have a sewing kit back in their office. Better yet, ask them to point out your aunt Betty who needs special TLC.

They can't. THAT is what a professional does. I am not marginalizing what they do - I just wish they would stop marketing themselves as Wedding or Event Coordinators. Brides feel they are getting something that they are not.

As I sat in that office and listened to her tell my Bride, "we will do everything you need done, don't worry." I politely asked when she wanted me to drop off the favors and decorations so they can set them up.

She looked right at me and said, "Oh we don't do that, the Bride is responsible for getting all of that set up."

MAKE UP YOUR MIND!

Look, it comes down to this: can't we all just get along?

If we have respect for each other and not treat each other as if they are the enemy. We can all learn from each other and certainly get along to create the perfect day for our Brides.

And it would certainly make my life a lot easier - and I like easy!

I Have a Secret!

Yes - the unthinkable has happened!

I am pregnant yet again.

We will now be a family of 11 (or 12 if you listen to the kids. They have decided they want twins!) We were tempting fate by saying it "would never happen again."

I am going to completely blame this on a certain Bride (who shall remain nameless) that got married June 27th. I took the next week off to spend time with Chad and the kids and- WAM! I should have known something was up! But this is what I get for marrying such a stud-muffin.

The family is thrilled, overjoyed and Mommy is a bit overwhelmed - but we are excited. Tharp #9 is scheduled to arrive mid-March.

Hey...I guess I can't diet now - what a bummer! :)

It's Only Money!

I had a wedding this past Saturday and I had to tell the Father of the Bride the last few checks he had to write to vendors. This is never a fun task - especially on wedding day so I was joking around with him.

At the beginning of this adventure, he was very nervous and uptight. Wondering how this wedding was going to "ruin" him financially. But I gradually worked with him, showing him ways we could save a lot of money and still have a rockin' party for his little girl.

So, now almost a year and a half later, here we are. The day his daughter gets married to the man of her dreams. How is Dad handling his financial ruin?

"It's only money," he says BEAMING with pride.

I tell you this not because I support spending lots of money on a wedding - quite the opposite. A wedding is a time for reflecting, making beautiful memories and celebrating a union that will bear fruit for generations to follow. Congrats to all of the newlyweds this weekend! May your future be full of joy!

It Has To Be PERFECT!

These 5 little words can be deadly.

Last night I had a beautiful wedding. Everything went off without a hitch. Well.....The Groom's shoes & pocket square didn't come in until the day of the wedding, one of the Groomsmen's tuxes were wrong, and the Bride's bustle didn't work at all. It ended up ripping the dress and I had to attach it with a mega safety pin. But that was it.

You may be thinking, "THAT'S IT!" But really, that's not bad. The Groom is really upset and wants to sue the Bridal Shop. I completely understand his anger and his frustration. The tuxes all ended up working out and looking wonderful. However, the bustle was another story. I totally agree that the Bride should receive some compensation for the alteration of the bustle which didn't even last 45 minutes and ultimately destroyed the chiffon lace.

You have to realize that things happen in the course of planning a wedding. Mistakes, accidents, freaks of nature and acts of God. "Perfect" simply does not exist. You can come very close to it (I do it a lot and it feels great) but there is always something that goes differently than planned.

I know I am in trouble when I sit across from a Bride and every other word is "perfect". That is when I politely tell her that I don't think we are a good fit. You will do yourself a HUGE favor if you tell yourself from the very beginning that you will be just fine if something happens to deviate from the plan. Nothing has to be perfect. Keep a smile on your face and a sense of humor at the ready. Remember, all you NEED to get married is a pastor and your Love!

Brides Behaving Badly

As a wedding planner I hear all kinds of crazy stories about Brides behaving badly. Most of them come from fellow vendors who have been forced to experience many of the tantrums and rages themselves.

As I was with my WONDERFUL Bride this weekend, I was listening to her hair stylist talk about the Bride she had done the weekend before. There was a lot of gasping, and stunned silence as the stylist recounted the rude behavior of the Bride. She showed up almost 30 minutes late for her appointment (she was lucky they still took her in my opinion), she used foul language, was down-right rude to the stylist & took a phone call in the middle of her appointment where she actually left the salon!

Unfortunately, there are a lot of Brides out there that believe if they have the title "Bride" they are entitled to taking a vacation from being a human being.

Don't be this type of Bride!

With the overwhelming commercialization of the wedding industry, all you hear about is the bad stuff (Bridezillas, Who's Wedding Is It Anyway, Redneck Weddings) and that it is "all about the Bride." Well, I am here to tell you that it is NOT "all about the Bride." It is about you as a couple and the joing of your two families.

Being a bridezilla is NOT a badge of honor - it is a label of disgrace.

As we sat there listening and shaking our heads in disbelief, I wondered to myself what that marriage would be like. If she had that much contempt for a perfect stranger, how would she treat her husband - or better yet - her mother-in-law?

I know weddings are stressful - but for PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, don't be a BBB (Bride Behaving Badly) & remember the Golden Rule that your parents taught you when you were little:

Do unto others as you would have done unto youand I promise you your wedding planning and day will go much smoother and you will start your marriage off with your reputation in tact!

Vendors Are Not Out To Get You!

I know that planning a wedding is expensive.

Very expensive.

But that does not mean that vendors are out there lurking around every corner to take advantage of you. And it doesn't mean that their prices are inflated to an unreasonable amount.

Now, Of course I know that there are scam artists out there and new people to the industry that just don't know the ropes yet - these things do happen. But if you do your homework correctly, these people will be weeded out pretty quickly and you won't have to worry.

Let me tackle a few misconceptions:

#1. If you add the word WEDDING the price goes up.

Not all the time. However, there is a REAL REASON for it when it does happen. Weddings are a very stressful time and it tends to bring out the worst in people. I hate to say it - but it does. Vendors have to bend over backward to make deliveries at special times, the service is usual special or custom and it takes a lot of labor. This takes time which takes money. That's why wedding items cost more.

#2. The wedding Industry is a real racket - "I'm in the wrong business - I should be a photographer, all they do is press a button and they get $3,000!"

This is so wrong. First of all, you are watching too much WE t.v. and Platinum Weddings. Most of us don't get paid like that. Secondly, as a planner, the most complaints I get are about the bill for a photographer. I will not say that I haven't seen some obscene fees, but most are extremely reasonable for what they do. The problem is, you only see 10% of the work. The other 90% is spent in front of a computer editing each picture painstakingly so they look perfect. Photographers are artists - just like the rest of us consider ourselves.

#3. I can have my friend do it and save the money

Look - I am all for saving money. That is part of my job as a planner - but there are just some things you should not do to save money & that is forgo a professional vendor to save money. There are HUNDREDS of other ways to save money other than this. Look at what could happen:

~ No DJ - you have no MC for the evening. No one to keep things going and no one to read the crowd and change the type of music to get them dancing. The party dies.

~ A friend takes the photos - her camera battery quits in the middle of the ceremony. What do you do now.

~ Your Uncle Jim is going to video the whole thing but has a bad bout of gout before the big day & can't do it.

~ You buy all of your flowers from a discount wholesaler and keep your Bridesmaids up until 3 am wedding day making the bouquets.

These aren't exaggerations - these are real things that DO HAPPEN.

#4. You need to keep checking up on your vendors or they will forget

If you have done your homework and you hired professionals, then at some point you need to LET GO & TRUST your choices. Your vendors will come through with what they are contracted to do. Trust yourself!

I know it is hard to spend so much money on one day of your lives (so don't spend like crazy!) Take it slow, make sure you research and feel comfortable with the professionals you hire. Remember, they are there to help you enjoy the day - NOT make it more stressful for you.

Chair Cover Sashes - How Do You Tie These Things!

Chair covers are definately beautiful and when you add the coordinating sash everything seems to pop.

But how do you tie them?

There is really no perfect way to do it. When I first started I thought there was a "correct" way to tying bows. In fact, they were such a pain that I scoured the internet looking for the proper way to tie them. I found nothing

So, I am here to tell you that you can be as creative as you would like with your chair covers and sashes. If you are tying a bow - do it just as you would tying your shoes. You will then need to straighten it out and make it lay right.

I am including a few pictures of sash variations to give you an idea of what is being done. But don't be hindered but what you see here - let your creativity go when thinking of the decor' you have chosen.

You can use the sashes on tables as well as table runners. Anywhere you want color - a sash could work.

Brittany & Brock sittin' in a tree; K-I-S-S-I-N-G!

Well they did it - and they did it WELL!

What a beautiful ceremony on the canal at the Indiana State Museum. Watching all the beautiful Bridesmaides walk down that magnificent staircase escorted by the handsome Groomsmen was breathtaking. Most of the 8 kids in the ceremony went down the aisle as planned and when it was time for Brittany to turn the corner and walk down the 80 foot staircase with her father, I could hear people actually gasp. She was that beautiful.

This couple looked like they walked right out of a magazine. I watched as Brittany was getting her picture taken and a little girl named Lilly (she was no more than 4 years old) who was visiting the museum gazed up at her with big brown eyes at if she was the real Cinderella. She asked if she could watch and Brittany graciously said of course and talked with her for a few moments. I believe that will be a memory little Lilly will carry with her until her wedding day.

For those of you who know me - I don't like the word "perfect". However, I can honestly say that you could use this word for this wedding. It takes a lot of people to make that happen: Mike Wise is one of the best photographers out there (hurry up with those pictures Mike!); Jeff Hodson & X-Sight Music knows how to run a wedding smoothly and how to interact with the guests (I trust you implicitly); Kris Livovich with Sugarfield Flowers - I am speechless (which is hard to do) the flowers were stunning and flawless; Bob Shappell and Inspired Images - I know the video will be incredible. I love that you know exactly what you are doing and your work is awesome; "No Identity" - the live band rocked the house! Erin Enright designed not only a beautiful wedding cake but recreated a picture of the Bride & Groom with their first cars - in cake! Too cool. And the Indiana State Museum was a perfect venue for this platinum wedding complete with delicious food and wonderful service from Center Plate.

The colors were chocolate brown with light pink and it was done elegantly and with class. As with almost any wedding, there were some changes we made at the last minute - but this couple was so flexible and understanding everything just rolled seamlessly.

I loved working with this family. One of the perks of my job is the relationships I create with the families. I am always saddened when the event is over and I feel like I am losing very good friends. With Brittany I learned so much - waaaay to much about waxing, but important information nonetheless.

To Brock & Brittany - I wish you nothing but a long, long life filled with joy and beauty (and a few kids sprinkled in there!) I will always be here if you ever need ANYTHING! It has been pure joy working with you.

I love my job

It is wedding season.

Because of that I am very busy. If I am not with a Bride or at a meeting, I am in my office on the computer or on the phone.

My children are not very happy with this.

So after several snide comments of Mom working too much, I finally decided to sit them down and explain what I do.

"Mommy works with men and women that love each other very much & who want to spend the rest of their lives together. I really like what I do and I know it is busy right now, but it will calm down soon - I promise."

This seemed to work.

The next day my 7 year old daughter Becah came in and asked for one of my clipboards and I asked why she needed it (they have a bad habit of not returning things they borrow). She said, "I am a wedding Planner Mommy - I want to be just like you! I am working on a wedding right now. Eli & Emi are getting married, you can even come to the wedding!"

Emi is my 5 year old and Eli is her 3 year old brother.

But - I think they got the message!

Kissies to both of you! What a wonderful day yesterday was - hot and sticky - but wonderful!

I want to thank St. James Lutheran for a beautiful service (thank you Pastor Salemink for fixing the sound system)! The really cool Boilermaker Special then transported the Bridal Party to the Couple's house where they got special pictures taken with Poker and Polly (in their fabulous outfits made by Mom).

Then it was off to Duncan Hall for a Rockin' reception. Catering By Debbie did a great job with the food - it was delicious! American Vibes had us set up with great tunes for the evening, My Heart's Desire did an outstanding job on the cakes! 5 different flavors in all (lemon, spice, strawberry, marble, & almond) complete with a cake topper that had a Bride pinching the Groom's butt. So appropriate for these two!

I have to say my favorite part of the whole day was when I went into the Groom's room and I told Justin how beautiful Sarah looked. Without missing a beat he replied, "she always does." You are a good man Justin.

I always take away something different from each of my Brides. Thanks to Sarah - I now have a Starbucks addiction.

Thank you Sarah...

BUT....

I also get the Wedding Bag! The Wedding Bag was a really cool burgundy alligator bag that they bought and used only for wedding stuff. I had admired it everytime I went to see them. It was very "Sex & the Cityish"

So, last night after I gave my final hugs, Sarah & her Mom presented me with the Wedding Bag as a gift. Now I finally look cool.

My last memory of this couple will be of Justin riding a unicycle with a "just married" cape that his mother made & Sarah laughing hysterically as Justin was taunting her to jump on so they could go to Florida.

My prayers for you are of a long, joyfull, fullfilled life together.

Last night was a wonderful night for Danielle & Chad. The ceremony went perfectly and other than a bustle issue - the reception was perfect (thanks to Rozzi's & X-sight Music). In fact, the rain even held off until 11 pm. Thank you God!

Piel photography did a great job hustling and putting up with our tight schedule. They definately now what they are doing.

Jefferson House of Flowers did a BEAUTIFUL job on the flowers!

Pastry Diva's cake and pastries were to die for as usual - I guess I can start another diet Monday.

Thank you to the Courtyard by Marriott for taking such WONDERFUL care of the wedding party and guests.

I am so thrilled that I am able to work with such talented and professional vendors at all of my events. Thanks to each and every one of you for making Danielle and Chad's day so beautiful.

And to Danielle and Chad: I am sure you received all kinds of advice from your parents and friends on love and marriage. I think I will close with the words you chose as the theme for your wedding:

Today is Danielle & Chad's wedding. This is one cool couple! They are having a Sinatra themed wedding and reception. The ceremony is at Lutheran Redeemer and the reception is at the fabulous Rozzi's Continental Ballroom.

The other great vendors they chose were X-Sight music, Piel Photography, and Pastry Diva (she's half the reason I have to lose weight & Rozzi's is the other half!)

I have so much fun with this couple. They both work very hard, which is refreshing to see. One of the perks of my jobs is that I get to know my couples very well and it was always a fun experience "dealing" with Chad.

As always, I Pray that you have a strong a wonderfully happy marriage! Thank you for including me in your day!

You Can't Get Married!

I received a frantic phone call today from a freaked out MOB who asked me if it was possible for a pastor to refuse to marry a Bride and Groom.

The short answer is, "yes".

Of course they can. This may be a bit alarming to you- but with the unbelievable 51% divorce our that country has; our clergy is getting just a bit more observant and cautious when saying yes to impending nuptuals.

However, if this does happen to you, you can usually find another pastor that will help you out. But I want to stick my big nose in here, take a risk and say that most likely, if a pastor has refused to marry you -there is something going on that you need to resolve before rushing into marriage.

Take some time and work it out. It doesn't mean that you can't get married in the future. Your marriage will be stronger and more durable because of the time, work and effort that you put in.

Look into counseling or go to a married couple that has been married for a long time - that you respect and get along with. There are so many options open to you. Don't look at this as a death sentence - look at it as an opportunity to learn more about your "soon-to-be" spouse.

You would think that we would have no problem with this since our engagements are getting longer. But the problem is - we are not engaging in that time. We just focus on menu choices, dance lessons and color selections. Set time aside to plan for marriage or after the party is over you will wonder who that person is you are sleeping with!

Pre-Marital Counseling

I know that most couples hate to hear that they have to go to pre-marital counseling.

I must confess, I was really angry 13 years ago when Chad and I were told we had to do Pre-Cana (the Catholic version of pre-marital counseling). I was trying to finish college, get all of my wedding planning done, move back home and prepare for this big change in my life. Chad and I had dated for 6 years - there was nothing we hadn't discussed - this was more of a pain in my butt than helpful!

But we did it. We even went to a weekend retreat! 1 1/2 months before our wedding so we were in the "going crazy" mode.

As we entered I will tell you, neither of us were happy. But that quickly changed. We let the stress of the planning leave our bodies as we realized we we working on the rest of our lives! This is what we were getting married for! We talked about things that could & WOULD happen - how would we handle them? This had nothing to do with the menu selection or the order of the Bridal procession. This was "real life" stuff.

Chad and I came out of that weekend refreshed, happy and excited! More about the marriage and the joys we had ahead of us than the wedding. In fact, we knew that weekend that we would teach pre-cana ourselves (and we still do today).

Never underestimate the power of this incredible time together. Do not see it as something someone has forced you to do. Look at it as an opportunity given to you to grow. It has been offered to you because it works!

Anything that brings the two of you closer is a good thing. Try it - you'll like it! :)

The In-Laws Are Your Family Too!

So often I hear my Brides call their soon-to-be in-laws the "out-laws". While I totally understand where they are are coming from - I feel the need to take a step back and analyze just where this feeling comes from.

A marriage is NOT just between two people. It is a marriage of families. Don't believe me? Just ask any couple that has been married for more than 50 years. Unfortunately, with the craziness of today's weddings, we have all but forgotten that the engagement is the time to "engage" with the family. Get to know each other, spend time together and see what your families are like.

Your "family of origin" is the biggest indicator of how you will behave and react in the same situation. How does his mother react to his Father? Does she serve him or does she lavish him with love? He will most likely expect the same from you.

Does he know that you came from a house where the Mom worked and everyone pulled their own weight? Maybe his Mom stayed home and catered to the family. There is no right or wrong here. You just need to get to know each other. Give the families a chance to bond.

This will make the wedding day soooo much more enjoyable and life after the wedding a pleasant experience. People are different. Don't do your families such a disservice by throwing them together the night before the wedding and expect them to get along perfectly. It is a stressful time.

Remember to put the "engage" back into "engagement" and not only will your wedding day go smoother, but you will have grown relationships that will carry into your marriage as well.

The Omni Severin Hotel Open House

I was honored to be asked by the Omni Severin Hotel to be a part of their "Something Old, Something New; A Journey for the Senses" event on Sunday. It was well put together by their catering Sales Manager, Rebecca Raymond and I was so thankful to be a part of it.

What was so interesting about this event was how many other incredibly talented event/wedding planners I had the chance to mingle with and learn from! Most noteably, Circle City Planners who are well known in indianapolis. Their owner Tonya Shadoan is a very cool lady and knows her stuff. Thank you Tonya for your kind words!

The best part though, was I had the chance to pair with a florist from Indy that I had never worked with before. RUE de FLEURS (Road of Flowers) was FABULOUS! As you will see in the pictures below, their flowers were stunning and perfect for what I had envisioned. Brenda Williams is the owner and I really enjoyed working with her. Thank you Brenda for your hard work and all of your support!

Here is what Brenda and I had the chance to do:

We took Gates Meeting Room and turned it into a rehearsal dinner. But not any ordinary rehearsal dinner - we based it around the four seasons with a variety of reception table scapes so Brides could see several ideas of how to set their guest tables. A HUGE thank you to Jesse Vogel and BBJ Linens for allowing us to use their beautiful linens for all of these great looks.

Then we took the Illinois Room and turned it into a very simple yet upscale cocktail area.

All of the designers were given a table in the Severin Ballroom Lobby to set as they wished. They called this "Inspiration Alley" and that it was! It is amazing the ideas that designers come up with for table designs.

Brenda and I chose to go very classy yet elegant. I LOVED the dramatic look of the red roses. But then, I'm a sucker for romance.

Finally, I was given the chance to speak for 20 minutes. I chose to speak about: "The Bliss Method: How to Plan Your Wedding and Save Your Sanity!" It went wonderfully and if I ever figure out how to put it on the internet - you can see it. I love having the chance to answer questions after a talk, so many Brides are just afraid to speak up!

It was a FABULOUS day and I had a great time. Thanks again to Rebecca, "Mo", and the Omni staff for an excellent event!

The Winter Bridal Gala

Wow! What an incredible success this show was. I am so grateful for the fabulous vendors that participated and the amazing amount of Brides that attended. It is such a joy to know that an event that you worked so hard on was so beneficial to every one involved. I especially want to thank Jeff Hodson & http://www.wedplan101.com/, Rozzi's Continental Ballroom, American Party Time, and Mike Wise (our resident photographer) for the extra work they all put in. If you are a central Indiana Bride, this is the show for your wedding planning.

Also, our grand prize winner, Lindsay Reynolds is ecstatic! Who wouldn't be winning over $10,000 worth of free services? I love it when I get to work with Brides that are genuinely appreciative and grateful for the prize. Her wedding is in March of 2010 and I can't wait to get started!

Bridal Show Season is Upon Us

'Tis the season for Bridal shows and meeting Brides. It never ceases to amaze me how Brides use Bridal shows. I think they go into them thinking, "OK, don't make eye contact and we won't have to talk to them. That way we will maintain control." But they don't realize that we vendors are really there to help. The Bride could actually forego the initial meeting by asking all the questions they have at the show. Not only that, but they have the opportunity to ask other vendors how they feel about working with the vendor they are inquiring about. We spend a lot of money to have the chance to talk to Brides that actually have questions. It just seems anymore that we have to drag questions out of the Brides as if they are being forced to be there.

Last weekend I was at the West Lafayette show at University Inn. It was a good show. I love it when I get to see other vendors that I love to work with, that I consider my friends. Laszlo Kiss with Photographika is definately one of those. He is a great photographer and I love reccommending him. He introduced me to a new friend, Ian Michael Green, also a photographer. I look forward to working with him sometime soon. This weekend is the Northwest Indiana Bridal Expo in Valparaiso (my old hometown area) at the fairgrounds.

The Ultimate Bridal Survivor Wedding Guide & Planner sales are going well! It is interesting to see what works and what doesn't work. But I know there are Brides that could really use this system and I won't stop until I find what works. As always, I am grateful another great week and everything I received from the Lafayette show. Now on to another!

Welcome to 2009! This is going to be a great year I can just feel it. I have so many incredible things in store for this year I can hardly stand still!

I just learned what a blogger WAS and now I am one - what a technical age we live in. But I am determined to know more than (or at least keep up with) my kids on computer skills and they are all still in elementary school. Pretty sad, but a goal nonetheless.

So, here's to the year that will bring thousands of book sales, beautiful events, a variety of speaking engagements, a better economy, and a VACATION!
